V60

An estate (wagon) variant of the Volvo S60 to compete with the BMW 3-Series Touring. It comes with the same range of engines and transmissions as the S60, with the availability of AWD on the 3.0-litre petrol and 2.4-litre diesel: 1.6-, 2.0 and 3.0-litre turbocharged petrol engines and 1.6-, 2.0 and 2.4-litre turbocharged diesel engines along with six-speed manual, Powershift (dual-clutch gearbox) and Geartronic transmissions. Power outputs vary from 115PS (DRIVe) - 304PS (T6) and top speeds from 118mph - 155mph.
"What's that estate over there?"
"It's a V60 T6."

dual-clutch gearbox

Invented by a Frenchman just before WW2 and introduced to road cars in 2003 in the Golf R32, this type of transmission is a semi-automatic gearbox - two clutches take care of two sets of gears. One clutch takes care of odd gears (1, 3, 5, 7) and the other clutch deals with the even gears (R, 2, 4, 6).

How it works:
One clutch has 1st gear engaged, with the car moving forwards. Meanwhile, the other clutch has 2nd gear ready to be engaged. Come change-up time, clutch no.1 disengages 1st and clutch no.2 engages 2nd gear and the car keeps going, whilst clutch no.1 prepares 3rd gear for engagement. All of this happens within milliseconds, so power delivery to the road is uninterrupted.

Usually - though not always - dual-clutch gearboxes are more fuel-efficient than an equivalent manual gearbox.

"What gearbox have you got in your Audi TT?"
"Oh, I've got Audi's (VW's) dual-clutch gearbox. It's fantastic!"

Geartronic

Similar in concept to Porsche's Tiptronic gearbox, this 'manumatic' (Manual/automatic) gearbox from Volvo allows the driver to select gears, whilst allowing them to still have the benefits of an automatic gearbox - namely, just sticking the gearlever in "D". The gearbox will change up at the redline should a dozy driver forget to upshift before then. Available with Volvo's T6 and D5 engines only.
"What gearbox does this have?"
"This has a six-speed Geartronic gearbox."

Evoque

Small Range Rover based on the Land Rover Freelander, which in turn is related to the Ford Mondeo. Available with a 240PS 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine or a 150/190PS 2.2-litre turbocharged diesel engine mated to either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic gearbox.

X-Type

Based on the Ford Mondeo, this was Jaguar's smallest saloon, created to compete with the 3-Series. It was FWD because neither Jag nor Ford had a suitable RWD platform to build it on.
Available as a saloon or an estate, with FWD or AWD, buyers could be had with a 2.1-, 2.5- or 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol or a 2.0- or 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbocharged diesel, with either five- or six-speed manual or automatic gearboxes, the 5-speed variant of the latter having a "J-Gate"-type gear selection movement.

The model was discontinued in 2009, enjoying an eight year production run.

A7

A slightly more practical A6 from Audi to rival the Mercedes-Benz CLS. A 5-door hatchback (liftback), available with 2.8- (204PS) and 3.0-litre (300PS) six-cylinder petrol engines (the latter being supercharged) and a 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine in three states of tune (204PS, 245PS and 315PS), with the most powerful engine having two turbochargers for extra oomph.

A high-performance variant - the S7 - is equipped with a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged eight-cylinder petrol engine; the same engine in fact, as the second generation Bentley Continental GT.
"Is that a CLS over there?"
"Nope. It's an Audi A7."
"Really? they look similar in profile."

Farting in church

Just keep looking forward, trying not to snigger and ignore the horrified expression from the old lady next to you.
Example: Does this entry need one? Oh OK then. Farting in church.
