Usually occurring among young people at the front of festivals and night clubs and sometimes concerts. It normally occurs when there is a genre of music with a drop in it e.g. rap, rock, electric, etc. It is usually started by one or a few people who spread their hands out gently pushing others back who then in turn notice what is going on and start to form an empty circle within the crowd. Others can join in the process of gently pushing the people next to them back to expand the circle. There are sometimes one or two people in the middle skipping around the edge ushering people to move out. Sometimes there are people doing acrobatics through the middle of the circle to add the the hype (but if you do this make sure you do this before the beat drops obviously). Then when the beat drops everyone rushes into the middle of the circle at the same time usually jumping to the beat; try to keep your balance as there will be pushing. Some mosh pits pulse e.g. they go in then out a bit etc. but some don't and just go in and stay in for a bit so just play it by ear. There is sometimes chanting you can join in with. In most mosh pits if someone or a few people fall on the floor people will shout out "stop" and everyone around will help the people off the floor quickly. So in essence they are a good way to make friends with random people and enjoy the music more but with a slightly increased risk of injury.
