Made popular by Joss Whedon's Popular TV space western Firefly. The word was used in the show as a means to get around censorship laws.

An alternative to the phrase, "God damn it," first popularized in the old cowboy movies and radio shows where cussing was severely limited. Decades later used in the Joss Whedon show Firefly and the accompanying movie Serenity.
