Fitting Out

When a traveler tries to fit in by wearing local clothes, slang, or styles—but the attempt is so conspicuous that it has the opposite effect, making it obvious they’re not local.

Often involves brand-new traditional clothing, incorrect styling, overconfidence, and zero situational awareness.

The Norwegian girl in the sari we saw in Delhi was fitting out.

To not feel a sense of belonging in a social group. The opposite of ‘fit in’.

Guy 1: Did you get along with all the football players on their bus when you missed the band bus back to school after the game?
Guy 2: Naw man. I seriously fit out!
