calm down

One of the most infuriating expressions in the English language. Using this expression is guaranteed to make the other person angry if he/she wasn't already.

An invitation to someone to punch you in the face.
"Officer, that man just stole my wallet!"

"Now just calm down...."

Calm down bomb

A paradox: telling someone to 'calm down' always, always infuriates that person. Dropping the 'calm down' bomb is the ultimate act of passive aggression - it says "You're out of line, and I need you to act in a more appropriate manner, like me." Needless to say, this is not calming.
A: Goddammit! How could they possibly cancel Arrested Development?
B: Dude, you need to calm down.
A: Calm down?? Fuck, I am calm, what do you mean calm down? (goes apeshit, breaks lamp, exits room)
C: You HAD to drop the calm down bomb.

Calm down, James Brown

What you say when somebody gets over-hyper and starts jabbering on and on, or uses their outdoor voice on a subject you personally think is undeserving of the effort or don't really care to hear the whole story about. Say to somebody who starts sweating profusely while talking.
Example #1
Joe: "Look, I told you not to play my ps3. You always scratch the discs and never put them back in..."
You: "Calm down, James Brown. Damn. I wasn't anywhere near it."

Example #2
Jenkins: "I just wanted you to come out for a beer, but no. You had to leave me hanging by myself and I got kicked out of the bar and..."
You: "Calm down, James Brown. I had my own shit to deal with."
