For an immigrant to a new country, to give up his old culture, dress, and speech and adopt the new country culture. Can also mean selling out, giving up your culture or background.

Used in some high schools in SF Bay Area that have a lot of immigrant students, especially from Asia. Some of the immigrant kids literally "take off the turban" that they used to wear and dress American.
Komar is hanging with the goth kids and doesn't go to temple anymore. He really took off his turban.
