The statistical equivalent of an indirect proof (a proof by contradiction): to try to show that a hypothesis is true, start by assuming the opposite, then look for evidence that this is a false assumption.

Unlike proofs in algebra and geometry, where the evidence usually involves proving that some result is logically impossible, the hypothesis test in statistics only shows that something is highly unlikely.
