A model of cognition asserting that the fundamental operation of all cognitive systems is to seek, interpret, and remember information that confirms existing cognitive structures. Perception is hypothesis testing; memory is reconstructive bias; reasoning is motivated by prior commitments. This theory argues that unbiased cognition is a myth—not because humans are flawed, but because cognition is bias. A system that treated all incoming data with equal weight, with no preference for its current model, would be paralyzed.
