Unintentionality Bias

A cognitive bias where harm caused by an individual or institution is automatically excused or minimized if the actor claims it was unintentional, while harm caused by others is treated as deliberate and malicious even when intent is unclear. The bias operates asymmetrically: one’s own side is presumed well‑meaning, opponents are presumed malevolent. Unintentionality bias is rampant in politics, corporate scandals, and interpersonal conflict, allowing systemic harm to be dismissed as “just a mistake” while punishing the same behavior in rivals.

Example: “When his platform leaked user data, he called it an honest oversight; when a competitor had a similar leak, he called it criminal negligence. Unintentionality bias: intent ascribed to favor the in‑group.”

When you're on Facebook Messenger and you accidentally hit the "thumb's up" button, usually at the worst possible time.

"I'm having a really rough day"

"What's wrong?"

"My dad passed away. 😰"

"👍"

"FUCKING UNINTENTIONAL THUMB! Sorry about your loss."

Or ...

"How are things with Robert?"

"I found out he's cheating on me."

"👍"

"So sorry, the Unintentional Thumb strikes when you least expect it."

The Unintentional Thumb

When you're on Facebook Messenger and you accidentally hit the "thumb's up button, usually at the worst possible time.

It's going to look something like:

Person: "I'm having a really rough day"
Me: "What's wrong?"
Person: "My dad passed away. 😰"
Me: "👍"
Me: "Goddammit! The unintentional thumb strikes again! ...sorry for your loss."

Example two:
Person 1: "How are things with the hubby?"
Person 2 :"I found out he's cheating on me."

Person 1: "👍"
