Relationship Inertia

In the absence of an external force, a relationship in motion tends to stay in motion. This is when a couple has been together for a long time, and even though they don't seem overly happy with the situation, they stay in the relationship because why not. They are comfortable and probably too scared to experience a dramatic change and take their chances alone or with someone else. When asked, they individually might say that they do not want to marry their current significant other, but they have no plans to end the relationship and everyone pretty much assumes they will in fact get married even though their relationship has lacked a spark for quite a while. Eventually the urge to experience what life outside of the stagnant relationship has to offer is overcome by the fear that now it might be too late or not worth it and so people often succumb to RI, accepting lifelong mediocrity, perpetual what-ifs, and inevitable divorce down the road. RI usually causes more strife for all parties in the long run than it does if an individual acts proactively to avoid it and deals with the short term consequences. The longer RI exists, the more difficult it is to escape mentally, emotionally, and socially because of the awkwardness it would cause among family and friends if the relationship ended abruptly, as well as the overwhelming and growing guilt felt by the person who decides to end it.
Relationship inertia is sometimes seen when a couple gets into a serious relationship at a young age, such as in high school, and then stays together for many years and/or through college even if they have outgrown each other, especially if one or both of the individuals' only sexual partner has been the other in which case anxiety about sexual experience and an overly-stressed sense of loyalty also stabilize RI.

casual relationship

Everyone has had friends of the opposite sex, right? Do you have sex with them? Usually not. However, the idea of a casual relationship is another way of saying "friends with benefits." This is a friendship between two people that allows sexual intercourse. Rather than having a relationship that focuses on the emotional needs, this type of relationship is based only on sexual needs. In between boyfriends? Feeling restless? Horny? Lonely? It's at this time when you call up your your friend and fullfill the "obligations" of a casual relationship. During this, you are fullfulling your sexual needs. There's no need to mess around with with sadness, jealousy, or any other pesky emotions that are found in typical relationships.
In Sex and The City, Carrie is heartbroken over Mr. Big. This is when she calls her friend to fullfill her sexual desires in this casual relationship.

Relationship Roulette

A new relationship turned so horribly wrong, that you are willing to pull the fucking trigger and end it by any means possible. Most often by brutal honesty: the words no one wants to hear/you can never take back, or just plane old calling the DB out. Warning- this has the potential to backfire & make the situation So much worse & down right hysterical (I mean dysfunctional).
Example (calling said DB out):

You: "No, D. I cannot see you anymore. We are a fucking hot mess together"
Him: "But I'm in love with you, it was meant to be, I want babies with you, we are soul mates...etc......."
You: "Wow, D, you've totally opened my eyes. These past 3 days have been magical! Let's Facebook everyone and tell them the good news and YES, babies, babies, babies... NOW!!!

~(Friends reading above Texts!!!)... damn, shot down! she totally pulled out the "Relationship Roulette"

Example (Brutal Honesty):
Him:" I know it's only been 3 days, I'm going through a nasty divorce, we live states away from one another- but I'm in love with you, you are the one".
You: "lets just break this down: you are diagnosed bipolar, sporting a vasectomy and wife(x)? that is literal trailer trash (no, we just dropped your kid off at her trailer while she yelled obscenities at my car (windows up)! You have no compassion, my father just died but you 'aren't going to tiptoe around the fact that being a father is Awesome'. I'm a fucking Rockstar in bed. However, I've never wanted to try sea cucumber. I am scarred for life"
