romcom job

Jobs with a whimsical quality and tailor made for romantic comedies. There’s a reason why plumbers are found in pornos …they don’t really fit the brief for romcoms, despite being a respectable career choice in our dire economic times. Examples of romcom jobs are:

Greeting card writer (500 Days of Summer)
Bookshop Owner (You’ve Got Mail)
Apartment dresser (Leap Year)
Playwright (Something’s Gotta Give)
Ballet dancer (Saving Face — queer romcom with Joan Chen from Twin Peaks)
Wedding dress designer (The Parent Trap)
Aquarium veterinarian (50 First Dates)
eBay store owner (40 Year Old Virgin — shoutout to the hottest romcom girl of them all, Catherine Keener)
Film director (Pipe Dream — the guy is actually plumber but pretends to be a director to improve his dating life)

A sub genre of romantic comedy (rom com) in which an absurd number of A-B list actors are cast. Ostensibly, this allows for "intertwining" plot lines, but is clearly designed to maximize revenue by appealing to all conceivable demographics.

"Valentine's Day" is a rom com clown car, starring everyone who has ever lived.
