Originated in the late 1980's in Holmesburg Prison in Philadelphia by prisoners as a greeting to other residents of Holmesburg. Later shortened (or mispronounced by others trying to be down) to homie.

Yo holmie. Duff that guard so we can shank that snitch at chow for ganking them swag sammiches ott.
