Bop TV

Bop TV was a television station created by the government of Bophuthatswana and run by the Bophuthatswana Broadcasting Corporation. It launched on 31 December 1983 and originally broadcast mainly to people living in that homeland.
Why it became famous:
Even though it was meant for Bophuthatswana, its signal sometimes spilled into parts of South Africa, including areas near Johannesburg and Soweto. Because of this, many viewers watched it as an alternative to the state-controlled channels of the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC).
What made it different:
It often showed imported foreign shows and films.
Some programmes aired uncensored compared to other stations.
It mixed English and Setswana programming.
Because of this, people sometimes tuned in just for the entertainment value.
What happened to it:
After apartheid ended and Bophuthatswana was dissolved in 1994, Bop TV was absorbed into the SABC system and eventually closed in 2003.
“In the 1980s, some viewers preferred Bop TV because it showed foreign shows and movies that were not always available on other South African channels.”
