A ghost tag noun, verb is an account or channel mention (tag) in a social media post—most commonly an Instagram Story—that preserves the tag’s functional behavior (ex: notifications, attribution, backend recognition) while rendering the tag visually imperceptible or intentionally hidden from the viewer.
Ghost tags allow creators or brands to credit partners, route engagement, or enable tagged accounts to share or re‑gram content to their own Instagram Stories without disrupting the visual composition of the content.
First coined around 2019 by active industry users, the term emerged at a time when accounts could only share Instagram Story content to their own Story if they were explicitly tagged. The term has since become less widely used as Instagram expanded resharing access and introduced a native Mentions capability that allows accounts to be tagged without any visible, in‑frame text placement.

We typically avoid visible tags in our Instagram Stories, but we’re happy to ghost tag your account so you can still share our content to your own Story.
