A type of American scent hound that was bred to hunt racoons (or "coons"), opossums, and bobcats that try to escape up into the trees. Foxhounds, on the other hand, chase foxes, who try to escape into their dens in the ground. There are many different breeds of coon hounds, and their appearance can vary greatly. Many "fox hunters" in the US South actually hunt with coon hounds.
