A sexual understanding between people who would like a relationship but haven't yet found the right person. Said people are generally attracted to one another but do not see a future together. The point of a buffer is to fulfill sexual needs and to avoid sleeping with a potential love interest too soon.

Melvin became Ashley's buffer after her breakup until she was ready for another relationship.
