To be used when the term, girlfriend/boyfriend, significant other, fiance', wife/husband aren't appropriate. Used for long term relationships where the couple intends on being together for a lifetime but doesn't want the commitment of marriage.

Bill and Jenn have been together for 10 years but have opted not to get married instead they are each others 'l.i.f.e'.
