Any biological species that is sapient and has the ability to reproduce. From the Space Trilogy by CS Lewis, where the word includes humans and aliens, but not angels. The word is also used by JRR Tolkien and James Blish.

Guy 1: You're acting like an idiot. Are you really even hnau?
Guy 2: WTF is hnau?
Guy 1: Creatures that think and make babies. Emphasis on "think."
Guy 2: Oh.
