A pronoun used to talk about multiple people or one person whether your don’t know their pronouns or they use they/them pronouns.
Example 1:
Person 1: do you see that group of people over there?
Person 2: yeah they (multiple) look so cool!
Example 2:
Person 1: do you see them (singular) over there
Person2: yeah I wonder if they (singular) wanna hang out with us
