ignorantly racist

When someone says, does, or believes something racist without recognising it as racist, usually because racial stereotypes, language, or attitudes have been normalised around them. They may have no conscious hatred toward another race and may genuinely believe they aren’t racist, while still participating in or perpetuating racism. Ignorance can explain the behaviour, but doesn’t make the behaviour any less racist.
“He genuinely couldn’t understand why the joke was offensive because everyone around him had spoken like that growing up. He wasn’t being deliberately hateful — he was being ignorantly racist.”
