To cause the corners of one's lips to twirl upwards, even if just slightly. Associated with happiness.

Online, to replace the smile, the following smileys are often used: ^_^, :), =) plus other variations. Those can be replaced by a simple *smiles*.

A faint smile graced the young girl's pallid lips, as her feet gently slid across the grass.
