Fingers crossed 

A reference to the lunar cycles and the way that human fingers protrude from our bodies, thus being an external force as well as an internal force. They are at once of the body but apart from it. Thus to cross the fingers is to merge forces and invite chaos.

"Oh man, I dropped my phone in a puddle and a bus run over it."
"Ah mate, you must have had your fingers crossed."
