Interpretive hearing 

When someone listening to what they are being told, chooses to interpret what was said to them to fit their current needs.
Mom: son do NOT play with the iPad anymore.
Son: OK Mom
Mom: son you are playing with the iPad again!
Son: yes, but I stopped for ten minutes when you told me to stop.
Mom: now that is interpretive hearing!
