Abbreviation of the latinate title Juris Doctorate. Essentially, a postbaccalaureate degree awarded by an accredited law school. As opposed to other terminal professional degrees, this typically does not confer the title "Doctor" prior to a recipients name. Instead, the term "esquire" is typically appended following the name. (I.E. John Doe, Esq.)
