Polygyny is a form of Polygamy in which a man has more than one wife, girlfriend, or female sexual partner. It is the most common and accepted form of Polygamy. Polygyny is usually used in reference to humans but it is observed in all mammals and many other animals.
The main reasons for Polygyny are sexual pleasure, getting more children, and facilitating power.
Polygyny has been widely practiced and accepted in many cultures. It was very common and accepted in Viking society. Powerful Viking men used to have multiple wives, and often several concubines.
