A highly intelligent person whose intellectual curiosity inspires him/her to work hard at a difficult subject, often merely for personal pleasure, and often obtaining formidable knowledge as a result.

People who are addicted to video games and consequently know a lot about them don't count.

E.g. Leonardo da Vinci, the quintessential nerd
