Why-nant) Originally spelled Wynant. The name of the first settlers of Staten Island, now only 3 roads remain as the legacy.

The most famous Winant was John Gilbert Winant, close and personal friend of Winston Churchill, and was there as churchill learned of the event at Pearl Harbor. He was the second American Citizen, after Eisenhower, to be inducted as an honorary member of the British Order of Merit.
