An incredibly ambiguous phrase that drives me absolutely insane when people use it.
John hooked up with Mary. (so what did they actually do? Did they meet at the park? Did they talk? or did they duke like viagra-injected rabbits? who knows...)

2. hooking up
any form of getting some type of action, such as, making out, feeling things, or oral pleasure or sex between 2 people. "A hook up" is whats referred to as doing those things when your not going out with anyone
Guy:"yo, i hooked up with kristin last night!"
Guy 2:"Nice, what did you do?"
Guy1:"we only got to third"

1. To engage in romantic/sexual activity with another at a party/gathering.

Usually, one or both partners are under the influence of alcohol, or another judgement imparing drug. "Hooking up" usually involves little or no emotional attachment.

2. An exchange. To give/recieve/share an asset, or something of value, usually something that is tangible.

"Hooking up" is most commonly used in reference to the sale/exchange of illict drugs.

In Australia hooking up just mean kissing (with tongue. So basically you go to a party, mingle with some people and then u spot a cute guy/girl and start talking and flirting or watever and then you guys kiss. Thats hooking up. Usually isn't followed by anything after that night.
hooking up = fun times with random hotties.

Getting together to get it on. A term used to refer to cheap, meaningless, no-strings-attached sex. Hooking up does not consider any possible consequences between the parties involved or their unsuspecting significant others.

(verb)The act of making out or other sexual activity while not in the presence of others. The persons "hooking up" had to go somewhere else.
(1) I hooked up with this hottie after the club.
(2) Kissing someone at a bar is a bar smooch or making out, but taking them home or around the corner is hooking up.
