(pronounced GWY-lo, the Y being a long I) Cantonese- "White ghost" In Hong Kong, "Westerners", namely British and consequent Anglo offspring, are referred to with this word. It could be considered derogatory by those referred to if whites were sensitive to such terms, but our presumed superiority supported by the actions of these former subjects softens this to an acceptable term. Be careful using this word in front of HK Chinese for they are easily shamed and will be offended. Sort of like African-Americans using the word "nigger" in front of whites.
