A style of music emerging in the late 1960's blending soul, jazz and R&B, mostly played by African Americans at the time.
These days, most people mistake bands such as Red Hot Chili Peppers and Rage Against the Machine to be funk bands, when they are actually funk METAL bands. There is a lot of difference. These bands simply take the base styles and drum styles used in funk and incorporate them into metal.
REAL funk artists use pretty much the same lineup as a jazz group, which includes saxophones, trumpets, trombones, keyboards/pianos, drums, bass and sometimes guitar.

Funk is a more basic, hard rhythmic version of soul music. It is a type of black music which becaame more popular in the late 60's.
Famous funk artists include James Brown, Bootsy Collins, Larry Graham, Janet Jackson, Prince and Sly Stone.

Funk uses earthy feelings and very African polyrhythms to create a home-cooked kind of sound. It was originally the hardest form of R&B and incorporated jazz in its own way, often meandering into long jams built on a single bass groove.
Some funk pioneers:
James Brown, whose sixties soul hits eventually moved into funk music. Brown was the least psychedelic out of the Trio of Funk Pioneers.
Sly and the Family Stone, who, as many funk bands, began as a psychedelic soul band. Taking the extended jamminess of psychedelica and the black rhythms of soul, they pioneered a new, poppier kind of funk with their album, Stand!.
George Clinton is the last major funk pioneer, and my own personal favourite. Also known as Dr. Funkenstein and Uncle Jam, Clinton's groups Parliament and Funkadelic (and the conglomeration, th P-Funk Allstars) was perhaps the most influential of all three pioneers as they brought funk to a more mainstream audience.
Other funky artists: The Meters, The Ohio Players, Bootsy's Rubber band, The O'Jays.

Term to describe something incredibly cool.
Useful in situations where the term "fu*king cool" would be deemed inappropriate and/or where cool just won't hit it.
Add as extra dimension to the term "fu*king cool" because you are doubling up on the cool. There few things cooler than funky.
Best used as an adverb.
