A label commonly given by elitists to bands that define themselves as a metal subgenre they believe is the catalyst of the downfall of heavy metal.
Elitists, or bullies who diss a band they don't like by using the term, can label metalcore (ex: Attack Attack!, Bring Me the Horizon), glam metal (Kiss, Mötley Crüe), nu metal (Korn, the early works of Deftones), alternative metal (the current works of Deftones, Egypt Central), and some hard rock bands—even though they tend to get mislabeled as that—as fake metal.
It's gotten to a point where people have even tried to say that the only true genre is the one that came from psychedelic, acid, and blues rock, common example for that being Black Sabbath, who also paved the way for doom metal by merging metal with classical and more blues (props to them), and that all these subgenres (thrash for example) are just profit-driven fucks. I think.
Regardless, it's a commonly used term, and there may be a holy war ongoing.

This music is found in genres such as Glam Rock (Bon Jovi), Glam Metal (KISS, Twisted Sister), Nu metal (Slipknot, Korn), Deathcore (Bring Me The Horizon, As Blood Runs Black), some Metalcore (Attack Attack!, Iwrestledabearonce), Alternative metal (System of a Down, Papa Roach), some Hard Rock (people call AC/DC and Led Zeppelin metal).
Most mainstream metal sucks because of its very watered-down MTV style, which most metalheads dislike strongly.
Idiots, who have no clue what they're saying, call Led Zeppelin or AC/DC metal. This is not true at all. They both have told their fans that they play hard rock, not metal.
Bon Jovi is not metal and never will be. Their style is too love song oriented and they have appeared on shows like American Idol, which totally throws away metal completely no matter who is on that show.
Korn and Slipknot are not even heavy enough to be metal. Their lyrics, image, and singing is too mainstream to be metal. People call Slipknot death metal? Haha! This is a disgrace to true death metal, which was created by amazingly talented bands. That is just pure blasphemy.
Deathcore ruins death metal by invading it with talentless hardcore punk. Don't get any metalhead started on that...

Loud Rock Music that has nothing to do with Heavy Metal other than being loud!? People who think that Glam Bands like Quiet Riot, Motley Crue, Def Leppard, Poison, Ratt, Bon Jovi and Skid Row are (NOT) 'Metal' don't know what the hell Heavy Metal is! These bands are too sentimental and/or romantic and poppy to be 'Metal'! They are the opposite of what Heavy Metal is! Their image and style is too flashy and over-the-top! They wear more make-up than your girlfriend! People say they look like chicks, well yeah, they also look like clowns! Seriously, get a clue!
Manowar is NOT 'Metal'! Why? Because they are too cheesey and silly to be taken seriously! They've never been in any wars and they certainly aren't warriors, so their fake! Their lyrical themes are remeniscent of fairytales! And lastly, Motorhead is NOT 'Metal'! Why? Because Lemmy Kilmister disregards the term 'Heavy Metal'! And simply lables his style as Rock 'N Roll!
