1) To put an unnecessarily large effort into a victory that would be minor at best and Pyrrhic at worst. Named after the numerous failed attempts by the Russian army to capture the tiny coal mining town of Vuhledar which resulted in huge scores of Russian soldiers and equipment being brutally destroyed on a daily basis by the defending Ukrainians.

2) A tiny coal-mining town in Donetsk Oblast near Volnovakha and Mariupol. The town is stationed on a high ground, which enabled the Ukrainian defenders to inflict massive losses on the Russian attackers (see definition 1).
Just cut your losses already, you don't want this to turn into Vuhledar.
