A step on a staircase that is unlike the other steps. It is usually spaced closer together or farther apart than the other steps or has some other kind of deformity. Any or all of the above cause people to trip over it on a regular basis even though they climb that set of stairs frequently.

Derived from the character Neville Longbottom's habit in the Harry Potter series to forget to skip a vanishing step and subsequently get stuck in the staircase.

"Dang it! That's the third time today I've tripped over the Neville step!"
