Developed in France, and literally means "unisex," since these bikes are acceptable for men to ride despite having a step-through design like a woman's bike.

Mixtes are often confused with fixies, bikes with a fixed gear. However, it's possible to have a mixte fixie. In France, the word is pronounced like "mixed," but in America it's pronounced "mixedy."
