E. coli (full name Escherichia coli) is a gram-negative, rod-shaped bacterium. Contrary to popular belief, most strains of E. coli are harmless or even beneficial: many strains aid in our digestion. However, E. coli has gained a bad reputation from strain O157:H7, which can be present in hamburgers and occasionally causes severe disease. I am happy to have many strains of Escherichia coli in my stomach right now, but I'd like to avoid E. coli O157:H7.
