Popular hashtag and social movement first coined by designer fashion label JX™ to repurpose and reject societal definitions and media portrayals of what’s ‘ugly’: visually, socially, economically, and as it relates to love. The hashtag is used on images that call attention to people and practices historically considered ‘ugly’ in American culture, and declare them beautiful and present in our population.
1) A picture of a gay couple dressed stylishly in a traditionally heterosexual embrace is labeled #imugly for the purpose of mocking cultural bigotry of this type of act of public existence and love. 2) A picture of an attractive fashion product constructed out of imperfect/repurposed materials is labeled #imugly for the purpose of mocking wasteful practices of fashion labels that consider imperfections to be garbage.
