A genre of popular music characterized by a heavy, aggressive sound, the usage of guitar distortion and drums, and great power (often manifested in screamed lyrics and chaotic sounding guitar). Unfortunately, like other genres of popular music, it tends to emphasize style over substance. Additionally, it has a slew of subgenres that seem to fragment at the slightest provocation. While it has power, most metal musicians simply don't have the skill to harness that power effectively.

a type of music evolved from bands in the 60s like black sabbath and led zepplin that paved the way for metal to come into the 70s such as iron maiden and motorheadwho paved the way for bands in the 80s like slayer and pantera and megadeth and anthrax. Slayer with its fast riffs paved the way for faster drumming and riffs from bands like napalm death and morbid angel. In the late 80s early 90s there was hair metal which isnt even metal the there was grunge and then after grunge came the breakthrough of scandinavian metal like mayhem, emporer, borknager, and gorgoroth and things in that category now comes newer metal of today like lamb of god which was originally called burn the preist, and killswitch engage, god forbid, shadows falls, and more

Metal is a genre of music. D-uhhh. And like any variety of music, weighing its relative merits to other types is a waste of time because beauty is in the ear of the listener.

I like Marilyn Manson, Rammstein, and System of a Down. I also like My Chemical Romance, Green Day, Badly Drawn Boy, Franz Ferdinand, and Mozart. Go figure. Not everyone who listens to metal is a metalhead.

A type of music, that like most music, was only good up until the late 80's.
nu-metal is just as bad as modern rap. death-metal is just fun to laugh at. and all those other sub-genres appearing after the 80's deserve to die.
