Down the shore is the term used by people from New Jersey - specifically Northern Jersey (away from the shore area) - to describe going to the beach areas. Since New Jersey's beaches are all in the central and southern parts of the state rather than the Northern part of the state, which is blocked by New York City so there are no beaches, going "down the shore" means you're heading south. That's where the "down" part comes from. People who live near the beach wouldn't say "down the shore" because they're already living in that area. Once at the shore, if you're going to the beach you would just say "I'm going to the beach". But the term "down the shore" actually just refers to heading south towards the shore points on the New Jersey coast, or to the general shore area, because the Jersey Shore is more than beaches. It is also made up of boardwalks (with rides, food, water parks), bays, lagoons, many restaurants, etc. So if you are just going to hang out in those areas, you would probably just say "down the shore".
Girl from North Jersey: I'm going down the shore for July Fourth weekend!

Guy from North Jersey: Cool! What are you guys planning on doing down there?

Girl from North Jersey: You know, go to the beach, hang out on the boardwalk, go on some rides. The usual stuff.

Get the Down the Shore mug.
An obnoxious term that people from North Jersey and Pennsylvania use when referring to going to South Jersey beach towns. Unlike the people who live "down the shore" year-round, who just call it going to the beach like a normal person.
"Bruh, aren't you pumped to be going down the shore this weekend?"

"It's not a big deal to me man, I live by the beach all the time."

A term that some people from New Jersey and the Philly-area use to mean "going to the beach for a vacation." For some reason, it really irks many people, myself included. I go to the beach! And then, once I'm at my beachhouse, I go on the beach! It's quite simple, really. I think rich people from Philly invented this term when they would go to Ocean City in summers. And I guess if I had to use it, I would use it in relation to Seaside or Point Pleasant, but certainly not Long Beach Island (the best beach ever, cough cough). LBI is most definitely the beach!
Old lady or Philiadelphian or annoying person: Oh, are you going down the shore next week?

Me: ummm... Yeah we're going to the BEach. (forced smile).

A highly contagious mental disease caused by hanging around males down the shore with said illness. It's amongst the easiest to diagnose for what seems to look like full grown boys will act like 5 year-olds when encountering something that they do not understand. Such things include but are not limited to; emotion, intelligence or anything to do with people who have a higher chance of success in life. Said syndrome has only one speculated cure, and it is not yet known, however growing up is highly recommended as treatment for alleviation of symptoms. The syndrome is speculated to also be genetically inherited, and seriousness increased in those harbinger the Y chromosome
high school boys in the back of that bus clearly have "Down the shore Male Syndrome (DTSMS) " they hate on girls that like a guy that they don't know.

A naughty alternative to New Jerseyans who simply go down to the shore. In this case, a group of two or more will hide under a pier on the beach to... smoke pole.
I was arrested for going down on the shore with the chambermaid from the Tropicana. But I don't regret it, it was sweeter than yoo-hoo.
