Taking the L does not, as some people think, mean to suffer a humiliating defeat.

What it actually means is to accept a loss gracefully. To understand that losses will be inevitable in life, learn what you can from the experience, and shake hands with your opponent. To resign with self respect instead of delaying the inevitable and embarrassing yourself.

Some people simply cannot do this and will begin to act extremely immature when it's clear they're losing.
I could tell that Steve was going to hook up with Julia instead of me, so I had to take the L. It's not a big deal and I have other options.
