Two quite different processes with the core idea that the government should help organize society to make day to day life easier on common people and to create a more equal society. Socialism says capitalism is a necessary evil so any governmental influence must be built around somewhat free capitalism. Communism says that capitalism is an unnecessary evil that corrupts society, so it totally replaces capitalism with a working class utopia of sharing and caring that invariably turns into a totalitarian regime that terrorizes its citizens into working whenever things go wrong.

Currently, most of the really smart communists are staying quiet and moving to the field of robotics in the hope that once society is sufficiently automated they can implement universal basic income and declare pyrrhic victory.
Communism and socialism are never used in just one sentence - people always have to go on and on about them.
