Historically chamak derived from the persian جمكي which started from a song جمكي شبكي. The migrating persians were not as wealthy as the local population and their arabic was broken. This term was used to refer to them as problematic and is still currently used with its racist connotations by the Emirati population.

Foreigner arabs in the uae since then appropriated the term to refer to lower-class arabs, usually pointed out by their clothing or the areas they congregate. Of these areas is Oud Al Muteena, known for being a housing estate for single Emirati mothers.

This term has increased in popularity amongst the youth of Dubai and by non-Arab foreigners as well.

The title has adopted more connotations such as “homophobic and racist” mannerisms displayed by the individuals, yet it remains as a title given to someone based on outwards appearance more than character.
Today it is argued that this term is free from the racial and classist connotations it originated from. This is not true.
Person 1: I don’t want to go to Dubai Mall and have to deal with the chamaks outside.
Person 2: hey man, considering the uses of that term don’t you think we should stop using it?
