A track from an album’s writing/recording sessions, which can comprise of up to 50 or more songs, which was believed to have great potential or value to the artist and/or fans but did not make the final tracklisting. Artists either share these deliberately or they leak via some means, usually the Internet. It’s called a deep cut because of the emotional impact the track has either on the artist or fans regarding its failure to make the album. Often confused with “hidden gem” album tracks which do not become singles but have a strong artist appreciation or fan following.
Kylie Minogue and Madonna have extensive deep cut back catalogues that their fanbases know, perhaps, better than they do.
