Academically it refers to a "mortuary cult", which is an aspect of religion with a focus on the dead. Such as a tomb with a gravestone, alters dedicated to the deceased, or even funerals.

But when everyone else uses the term, they mean a religion that has a focus on either all of their members, or everyone who isn't a member, dying in some sort of religiously significant way, such as the rapture, or by mass suicide.
Evangelical Christianity is a death cult—they're literally trying to fulfill a prophecy to end the world!
