A barebones operating system kernel, which when installed with other components, functions like a normal OS. Though many times more stable than Windows, and far more customizable, the sheer ease with which it can be broken and the extreme complexity of its internals turn many users off from the idea. If the world were to use Linux, of course, it'd be just as secure as Windows is now.

Don't get Linux unless you're prepared to fix it every few hours.
