(Machan or Machii) Originally comes from the Tamil formal use of the word to address a groom marrying into the family by primarily the bride's brothers/sisters but is also used by the bride herself. Informally used for addressing a close friend as either machii (மச்சி) or machan (மச்சன்) it insinuates that your friend is so close to you as to the fact that he is family. It is akin to the use of "mate" in english informally.
Adressing a friend-
English: How is it going machan? or How are you machii?
Tamil: epdi machan poguthu? or Epdi Machii iruka?
