A lisp is a speech impediment that causes a person to pronounce 's' and 'z' incorrectly. There are several types of lisps, but the most well-known type is the interdental/frontal lisp, which uses the English 'th' sounds (θ as in "thistle" or ð as in "this'll").
When I'm wearing my retainer, it makes me talk with a slight lisp. I've gotten the hang of it, but sometimes it still thlips out.
