Bootstrap Operation

Mechanical Engineering Definition:
Dynamic system operation in which, once a cycle has been started by external power, working fluid maintains a self-sustaining process.

In other words, a system that, at first, requires a source to start, eventually becoming independent of that source.
The combustion engine that makes your car move is a bootstrap operation.
