Scion is a Toyota automobile brand meant to appeal to young, naive buyers. Scions are econo boxes with a huge emphasis on the word "box." The typical Scion automobile is boxy, unimaginative, boring, and front-wheel drive. Being front-wheel drive, they are cheap to manufacture and performance is lousy. Because Scions tend to literally be boxes on wheels, development costs are also very low. No high-paid mechanical engineers, automotive designers, or expensive CAD software is needed. With a price comparable to competing automobiles, Scion's profit margin is very high thanks to its low production costs.
