A piercing that is one of the oldest and most primitive. In ancient cultures around the world, such as Indian, North and South American Indigenous, African, and SouthEast Asian, these piercings were associated with shamans and spiritual leaders, or mystics, who donned the piercing as a symbol of spiritual consciousness , often believing that the piercing enhanced communication with the higher realms. Warriors and others also pierced their septums as a rite of passage.

This piercing done on the inner nostril cartilage of the underside of the nose, between the nostrils. Having gained popularity in the 80’s with punk and gothic subcultures, it is now trendy. People wear this piercing for both fashion reasons, for an edgy or alternative look, and reasons related to spiritual connection and rite of passage, or honoring ethnic roots.
In ancient cultures, septum piercings were often worn by spiritual leaders, shamans, and warriors, for protection and as a symbol of their connection to the spiritual realm.
