In Italy, penne are produced in two main variants: "penne lisce" (smooth) and "penne rigate" (furrowed), the latter having ridges on each penna.
N.B. Sometimes mistaken for "pene" in the Urban Dictionary, which is the correct term for "penis" in Italian and Spanish.
